If you want to delete all files in /tmp directory easily without deleting the directory itself is by giving the following command

rm -rf /tmp/.??* /tmp/*
You can put this into /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog into the "stop)" section. This will clean up /tmp at every shutdown and keep your disk clean. Please note that you should not run this command when X-Windows is running. - submitted by Krishnan Subramanian.
