페도라 코어 6 프리즈 해제

Jeremy Katz (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/JeremyKatz)님이fedora-maintainers (http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-maintainers/2006-July/msg00360.html)를 통해 알려주셨습니다.:

Xen을 주요 기능으로 포함한 페도라 코어 6를 배포하려고 준비하고 있고 그에 따라 기능들에 대한 프리즈를 하게되었으나 2.6.18-rc 커널 기반의 업데이트와 함께 Xen이 동작하기 위해서는 추가적인 작업을 필요로 하게되었습니다.

따라서 저희들은 Fedora Board와의 상의 끝에 test2의 프리즈를 Xen이 최신 커널 위에서 정상적으로 동작할때까지 프리즈를 해제하기로 하였습니다. 현재 예상으로는 7월 24일 월요일에 모든 작업이 끝날 것 같습니다. 계속해서 새로운 소식이 전해지는 대로 알려드리도록 하겠습니다.

FC1, FC2, RHL7.3, RHL9 지원 중단 예정

7월 26일로 예정된 Fedora Core 6 Test 2 출시에 즘하여, 여러 오래된 배포판의 지원 중단을 알립니다.

fedora-legacy-list와 freenode network의 #fedora-legacy IRC 채널에서 많은 토론을 한끝에, FC6 Test2가 출시되면 Fedora Core 1, Fedora Core 2의 지원을 끝내기로 했습니다. Fedora Core 3,4는 지원을 계속합니다.

Red Hat Linux 7.3과 9에 대한 결정도 내렸습니다. 새로운 문제나 버그는 올해 10월 1일까지만 받습니다. 이날 이후에는 받지 않을 겁니다. 우리는 최선을 다해 모든 문제점(버그)을 12월 31일까지 해결할 것입니다. 그때까지 해결되지 않은 문제점은 Fedora Legacy 프로젝트와 상관없는 일입니다. 올해로 레드헷 리눅스 배포판의 Fedora Legacy의 지원은 끝입니다.

커널 권한 관련 보안 취약성(CVE-2006-3626)

7월 14일에 리눅스 2.6 커널이 a.out 바이너리 형식을 지원함으로 인해서 커널이 로컬 유져가 루트 권한을 획득하려는 시도가 성공했다는 보안 취약성(CVE-2006-3626 (http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2006-3626))에 대한 발표가 있었습니다.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Fedora Core 4 그리고 Fedora Core 5는 a.out 바이너리 형식을 지원하지 않기 때문에 이러한 시도는 불가능했었습니다. 현재 저희들은 어떠한 방식으로든 a.out 바이너리 형식을 이용한 해킹은 불가능하다고 확신하고 있습니다. 또한, 저희는 OS가 설치될때에 SELinux가 enforcing 모드에서도 동작할 수 있도록 하는데, SELinux 역시 해킹 시도를 완벽하게 막아내었습니다. NewsForge: New Fedora test lead begins work

According to recent article at NewsForge (http://trends.newsforge.com/trends/06/07/11/1431207.shtml?tid=138&tid=2):

"I really want people to think of testing as part of development," Woods says. "That's a common theme in proper software engineering. Once something matures to a certain point, you have to start doing rigorous regression testing and things of that nature. I think the open source community needs some of that. It's not that I really need to tell people -- people know that testing is important. My real goal is to make testing easier." By integrating Red Hat's internal testing software into Fedora and bringing rigor to Fedora's testing, Woods hopes to bring some of that ease not just to Fedora, but to free software in general -- and, incidentally, to silence Fedora's detractors once and for all.
