Red Hat CEO Says Linux Could Become U.S. Standard
According to recenet article published in eWeek (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1982623,00.asp):
Szulik was the opening keynote speaker at the C3 conference (http://www.c3expo.com/) the week of June 26. He said the best-known open-source product, Linux, already runs on 13 platforms ranging from laptop computers to mainframes, and that it would soon be running on handheld devices and smart phones.
In his wide-ranging talk, Szulik also said programs such as Firefox are helping to spread interest in open-source software, and he said efforts such as the one by the NSA to create a trusted version of Linux could make open source a standard in the United States—as, he said, it is already becoming the standard in other countries.
Request for testing: DejaVu 2.7 font family
Nicolas Mailhot (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/NicolasMailhot) reports via email (http://fedoranews.org/cms/node/1279):
I'm calling for a round of testing/feedback on DejaVu (http://dejavu.sf.net/). DejaVu is the most popular FOSS derivative of Bitstream Vera. DejaVu is currently consolidating the Vera forks initiated after it become clear Vera would not be updated or fixed any time soon (http://www.gnome.org/fonts/ lists the last Vera release time as April 16, 2003). It's being proposed (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=170218) as the Fedora Core 6 default font.

As I'm working currently on a book on the use of Free and Open Source software in K-12 schools, and I think the complaint is reasonable. So, I have started a mailing list for this purpose at http://groups.google.com/group/k12opensource. While responses at the beginning will be limited, I'll announce this list at NECC in our Open Source lab and during our Birds of a Feather session on K12 Open Source as well.

QEMU a Virtualization System for Open Source World
According to recent article published on LinuxInsider (http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/MTR4vcAqcxHble/QEMU-a-Virtualization-System-for-Open-Source-World.xhtml):
In the case of x86-on-x86 execution, QEMU does become a virtualizer. Much of the emulation is bypassed, and the new KQEMU Accelerator module allows QEMU to run both user and kernel-mode code at near full speed. (User code executes at full speed; according to an estimate by Bellard, 90 percent of kernel-mode code will execute at full speed with the accelerator enabled.)
When the accelerator is activated, the QEMU emulator simply examines the code to verify that it can be executed natively, and dispatches it to the accelerator. The code runs at full speed until the next exception, interrupt, or virtual device access; QEMU then steps in and provides the service needed to maintain the virtual environment.
