Using Kexec and Kdump in Rawhide

Jeff Moyer has written an article about Using Kexec and Kdump in Rawhide. "The kexec-tools package was recently added to rawhide. This package allows the user to reboot his system without first passing through the BIOS. In other words, the running kernel acts as the boot loader, and directly jumps to the next kernel." He also told us that "I'm very interested in getting testing feedback (positive and negative) for both kexec and kdump."

New fontconfig and shared-mime-info in Rawhide

Matthias Clasen (mailto:mclasen@redhat.com) reports by email that "I have pushed new versions of fontconfig and shared-mime-info into Rawhide. That is in itself not very exciting, but the interesting bit about these two updates is that they both introduce mmap-based caching which has the potential to lead to quite a bit of memory saving. Both of these caching mechanisms are still somewhat experimental and in need of testing (which is why I pushed cvs snapshots to Rawhide, to get some widespread testing)."

OpenOffice.org 2.0 in Rawhide

According to Caolan Mcnamara (mailto:caolanm@redhat.com)'s blog (http://blogs.linux.ie/caolan/2005/10/20/ooo-20/), "Now that OOo 2.0 is released (http://www.openoffice.org/press/2.0/press_release.html), rawhide users can find it as 2.0.0-3, and for FC4 it is currently in update testing (http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/testing/4/i386/) as 2.0.0-3, and will be pushed final if the FC4 package doesn’t break anything carastrophically."

Great Networking in Fedora has Arrived

Christopher Aillon writes in his blog (http://christopher.aillon.org/blog/dev/fedora/20051019-testing.html) that "Faithful users of the Fedora Core 4 linux distribution can now connect to wireless networks reliably. A version of NetworkManager 0.5.0 was released into the popular distribution's updates-testing channel, allowing users the chance to preview the software before it is released as an update to the general Fedora user base."
