Sometimes when working the system beep is loud and disruptive so you want to disable it.

Edit /etc/inputrc with your favorite editor. Remove the comment from the second line set bell-style none - submitted by Joseph Hamish

One more suggestion related to tab completion settings in /etc/inputrc is:

set show-all-if-ambiguous on
