It's a great feeling to have hosted another successful Summit. And it's a joy to bring you a virtual reenactment in this month's issue of Red Hat Magazine. You'll find video segments from open source stars like Cory Doctorow and Eben Moglen who deliver inspiring, visionary keynotes on issues pertaining to digital rights management, the protection of ingenuity and freedom. Our own CEO, Matthew Szulik, opens up the festivities with his keynote, and our trusted writer-in-residence, Paul W. Frields, gives the skinny on the fun of Fedora at the Summit.

This month, we shifted our publication schedule around a bit to accommodate a couple of pieces about a hot topic in biz-think circles. The theory du jour is all about creative, collaborative, and open environments... the same kind of environment that creates Linux and exists in open source projects around the world. It's called "design thinking."

We got our in-house design expert (who also happens to be our boss) to give us a basic overview of design thinking--what is is, how it works, and what it changes. That should get you started.

We've been patiently waiting for the release of Fedora Core 5 and the excitement shows with the collection of feature articles from our Fedora coterie. And it's not just about this new release--you'll also find lively, compelling conversations about FUDCon, the future of the Fedora community, and Fedora Reloaded: Episode 5. You couldn't be more entertained if you were with Shadowman himself.

When Red Hat announces a campaign, we hit the ground running, and collaborating, and talking, and building. We start with good ideas repurposed for a product built on the open source philosophy: hey, look at us, we don't know it all (yet) but it's the ripe time to build. Which takes us to the announcement of our Virtualization Resource Center going live this past Tuesday. You'll find a lot of well-researched information on the resource center site and in this month's issue of Red Hat Magazine.

This issue is very near and dear to our hearts. We're talking all about the Red Hat Summit coming this June to the friendly and fun city of Nashville. But words just weren't enough for us to express our sentiments. You'll find a photo tour of the city with almost as much emphasis on music as Nashville itself. Within the featured articles, you'll also get a glimpse into one Red Hatter's experience last year at the Summit and how just attending landed him a job with us.

What is it about open source that translates so well to a variety of environments, cultures, languages, and systems? How do standards not controlled by a proprietary fiefdom maintain themselves? It seems the accepted rules of a commons apply, where resources are equally owned, requiring contribution, accountability, and responsible use to maintain.

It's not just history in the making anymore. The term's been coined and the revolution is now. This month's issue highlights the impact this movement is having on our culture and our lives. We've proven we're a species that relishes the values of transparency, truth, and collaboration.

The Free Encyclopedia defines open source culture as a "culture of participants who are able to modify products and redistribute them back into the community;" a balance between freedom and rights, the operative word being balance. Livings must be made, bills paid out--but surprisingly, more and more people are contributing to an open source model for as many projects as there are lines of code.

Happy birthday to us. We're one. Hard to believe it's been a year since we sent the first issue of Red Hat Magazine to hundreds of thousands of our closest friends, those subscribers who had their regular issue of Under the Brim upgraded to Red Hat Magazine. Our gift to you.

This milestone also marks an important time in our development. If you're tracking our progress by way of the American Pediatrics Association, at the age of one we tend to repeat sound or gestures for attention, babble with inflection, and we're making big strides toward using our sippy cups properly. Heady days for us, indeed.
